"All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware." — Martin Buber.

Tourism is one of the biggest reasons to travel as of yet, The need to see another country, is predominate in our quest to travel. This is defined as "travel to and stay in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited". In 2006 there were over 763 million international tourist moving across the world.

Leisure – Traveling for pleasure

The first country to promote tourism was Great Britain. It had a burgeoning upper gentry, which had extra money. They were the factory owners, traders and even the clerks and managers. The first company that helped ease tourism is Cox & Kings formed in 1758. A large number of discounts were made available and the working class too began traveling. Right now, more countries have geared themselves up for leisure tourists. Some of them are exotic, offering a greater variety in culture; some are even unique – such as the river tours across Europe and Asia. There is much to explore in history, natural beauty and even cultures across the world. London offers a wide variety of options including a very famous and old journey up the River Thames, a host of museums, art galleries etc.

Health Tourism – Finding the best medical option

In the early days it was associated wit spas and mineral waters to relieve gout to liver disorders and chest infections. Today however many countries right from UK, Australia and even India are well known for the high quality medical care. Some countries are chosen over others as they offer wholesome, cheaper and yet internationally comparable surgical and other options.

It could even a search for alternative medical care, such as natural healing centers and yoga. With the increasing change to an alternative lifestyle, this has become one of the key tourism activities of the world.

Business Tourism – In Search of Growth

This is becoming the number one reason that people reach for foreign shores. Business activities also combine pleasure, so the benefits are multifold. Hotels too have begun catering to these travelers and the most to benefit are international hotel chains. Some industries such as entertainment and software have a natural tendency to bring visitors. The economy of the world is getting increasingly networked and globalised. It is becoming imperative that we actually exchange ideas. Tourism is key to this vision.

There are of course many more reasons to access new shores, right from sports to pop culture. As long people feel the need to see the world across, tourism will be one of the fastest growing industries.
